On $500/mo spend, the estimated monthly cost breakdown for MetaMask Card is: gas $0.04, conversion spread $0.00, flat/FX fees $0.00, and amortised card/tier fee $0.00, for a total drag of 0% of spend. After $5.00/mo cashback that nets a gain of about $4.96/mo ($59.52/yr). Because MetaMask Card is loaded on-chain, frequent small top-ups add gas cost: a daily-spender profile pays about $0.80/mo in gas versus $0.04/mo for a single monthly load, so total drag runs 0.2% with daily reloads versus 0% with a monthly reload. Figures are conservative estimates and vary with conditions.
The MetaMask Card is a non-custodial Mastercard debit card that spends directly from your self-custody wallet: funds stay in your MetaMask wallet until the moment of payment, and it works anywhere Mastercard is accepted plus Apple Pay and Google Pay. It is no longer Linea-only. As of 2026 it funds across four chains (Linea, Base, Solana, and Monad), with New York and Texas users limited to Linea and Base. Cashback is paid in mUSD, MetaMask's own stablecoin issued by Bridge, a Stripe company: 1% on the free Virtual card and 3% on the first $10,000 per year (then 1%) on the $199/year Metal card.
The most important thing to know right now is that new US signups are paused and, as of July 2026, still paused. MetaMask halted Metal card orders on June 2, 2026 and general US signups in early June 2026, with no restoration date given. Existing US cardholders are unaffected, and non-US regions (UK, EEA, Canada, Switzerland, and core LATAM: Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Mexico) remain open. This lands just months after the card reached US general availability, including New York, in February 2026 at the end of a year-long US pilot that itself followed a 2024 EU and UK pilot.
This suits self-custody users who want to spend stablecoins without handing assets to a custodian and who value Mastercard-wide acceptance. Watch out for the self-custody mechanics: you must enable tokens and set per-network spending limits and priorities before spending, and every top-up and spend incurs on-chain gas, officially small and typically around $0.01. The Virtual card's 1% cashback is also cancelled out abroad by its 1% cross-border fee, netting roughly zero overseas; the Metal card waives the cross-border fee. When the card declines, the cause is usually incomplete verification or network state rather than the card itself.
